Today isn’t just a calendar date.
It’s a badge.
A battle cry.
And for some of us — it’s proof we’re still here when we weren’t sure we would be.
It’s National Cancer Survivors Day, and I’m not just writing about it… I’m living it.
I Survived Breast Cancer… But That’s Only Part of the Story
When people hear “survivor,” they often imagine balloons, pink ribbons, and inspirational quotes.
And while yeah, I’ll take a balloon or two, the real story of survival is messy, raw, and anything but cute.
It’s bruised veins and shaved heads.
It’s “chemo brain” and wondering if your eyelashes will ever come back.
It’s crying in the shower, then forcing yourself to get dressed anyway — because your kids still need breakfast.
But here’s the part they don’t tell you:
Survival doesn’t end when treatment does.
That’s just the part where you stop dying.
The real work is learning how to start living again.
What National Cancer Survivors Day Means to Me Now
Now?
It’s not about the diagnosis anymore.
It’s about deciding to live like the miracle I am.
This day is a reminder to:
- Show up — even if I’m tired
- Laugh — especially at the ridiculous stuff
- Tell my story — even if my voice shakes
- And love harder — because I know what it’s like to think you won’t get the chance
To My Fellow Survivors
Whether you rang the bell yesterday or twenty years ago…
Whether you’re still on hormone therapy or dealing with the aftermath of surgeries…
You are not just a survivor.
You’re a warrior.
A thriver.
A walking, talking middle finger to the odds.
Let’s stop tiptoeing through life like we’re afraid to break it —
We already broke it open. And we’re still here.
To the Ones Still Fighting
You’re not alone.
You are seen.
You are held.
You are already surviving — moment by moment.
And one day, you’ll be writing your version of this story too.
Final Words from the Heart (and the Scar)
My name is Elke.
I’m a daughter, a mom, a grandma, a coach, a creator… and I’m a breast cancer survivor.
Today, I’m not just celebrating being alive.
I’m celebrating what I’ve done with that life.
And if you’re reading this, maybe it’s your reminder to celebrate yours too.
Not someday.
Today.
